Vote trading and subset sums

چکیده
We analyze the complexity of vote trading problems with equal-sized voting districts. For two allied vote-swapping parties, the problem is polynomially solvable. For three parties, the problem is NP-complete.

Trading Votes for Votes . ∗ A Decentralized Matching
We study vote trading—trading of votes for votes—through the tools of the matching literature. Decentralized vote trading is modeled via an algorithm that executes a sequence of binding, myopic, strictly improving pair-wise trades. We show that with binary alternatives, an odd number of voters, and separable preferences, the sequence always converges to a stable vote allocation—a distribution o...
متن کاملTrading Votes for Votes: An Experimental Study∗
Trading votes for votes is believed to be ubiquitous in committees and legislatures, and yet we know very little of its properties. We return to this old question with a laboratory experiment and a simple theoretical framework. We posit a family of minimally rational trading rules such that pairs of voters can exchange votes when mutually advantageous. Such rules always lead to stable vote allo...
متن کاملVote Trading With and Without Party Leaders
Two groups of voters of known sizes disagree over a single binary decision to be taken by simple majority. Individuals have different, privately observed intensities of preferences and before voting can buy or sell votes among themselves for money. We study, theoretically and experimentally, the implication of such trading for outcomes and welfare when trades are coordinated by the two group le...
متن کاملVote Trading in Public Elections (updated version)
During the 2000 U.S. Presidential race an apparently new idea, called vote trading, was introduced to help one of the two major-party candidates (Gore) win. The idea was, through an Internet mechanism, to induce voters who supported a minorparty candidate (Nader) to vote for Gore in states where this would help Gore and to induce an equal number of voters who supported Gore to vote for Nader in...
متن کاملRevealing the Anatomy of Vote Trading
Cooperation in the form of vote trading, also known as logrolling, is central for law-making processes, shaping the development of democratic societies. Empirical evidence of logrolling is scarce and limited to highly specific situations because existing methods are not easily applicable to broader contexts. We have developed a general and scalable methodology for revealing a network of vote tr...
